Pirana Cam

by admin on October 8, 2009

A short video tour of the Piraña home until tomorrow morning.

The boys will be up around 5:00 am to get dressed and finish loading around 6. They will leave for the start around 6:30 (about 30 minutes away) to be there an hour before their first leg starts (the race rules not theirs.)

For now everyone except Goose is going to bed to get a full night of real sleep in a real bed that will hopefully last until Saturday night and carrying them through 200 miles. Team Piraña says Good Night!

Goose Update

by admin on October 8, 2009

Goose is allegedly on the plane from OKC to St Louis. He was supposed to arrive at 7:35 to connect to an 8:10 flight to Louisville. The OKC flight was delayed and is now supposed to arrive in STL at 7:50 to connect with the flight now leaving at 8:15. So far so good.

Supper Time!

by admin on October 8, 2009

What to eat the night before a race? Well, it depends on who you are. Weeble runs at 8:00am so he needs to be a little more careful, T3 runs last and won’t hit the pavement until almost 3:00pm, so he can live dangerously.

Mav wanted a turkey sandwich with mustard and veggies and he didn’t want to leave the hotel. So the rest of the guys drove to Subway and got him a sandwich and then went to Sesame Chinese and got soup, sesame chicken and rice.

The back to the hotel to feed Mav and themselves and watch a little TV.

Meanwhile they are keeping an eye on Goose. Goose was supposed to drop his car off at T3’s and then his wife was to take him to the airport. He had a 6:00pm flight and at 4:32 they were not at T3’s house. At 4:50 Mrs. Goose was there, but no Goose, at 5:04 Mrs. Goose was gone and Goose’s car was not there. The boys did hear from him and he claimed to be at the gate waiting for his flight. There is weather in OKC and in Louisville, so it is anyone’s guess how this is going to work out.

As of this post the current state of the team is:

T3 is watching TV

Mav is cleaning up:

Weeble is resting:

BFG is also resting:

And no one knows where Goose is…..

Shopping in Zombieland

by admin on October 8, 2009

The good thing about shopping in Zombieland is NO LINES, the bad thing is brain dead zombies trying to eat you.

Lunch time!

Of course, first Mav wanted clam chowder. Everyone else said no. So the GPS pointed out a place called The Shrimp Company and a place called The Fishery. Mav voted for shrimp, T3 plugged in Fishery. When they got there they found that it was in fact a very popular local place, however, everything on the menu was fried. Mav said no. So, back to the Shrimp Company. Turns out it was a good choice. The boys had steamed gulf shrimp and steamed salmon with broccoli, cajoun rice and hush puppies. Very good!

Then T3 decided they needed ice cream, or custard even!

So many choices, so little time…

Once the appetites had been satisfied the team decided to take in a matinee and Zombieland was the pick:

Zombieland – great movie. Mav was not very excited about going. He whined. He went and sat at the top of the theatre until the boys begged him to come down:

Finally thought Mav kicked off his shoes and had a good time:

After the movie it was time to go shopping for race food. A Kroger was located and the boys bought fruit and cookies and water and sandwich stuff (turkey and pb&j) and anything else that caught their fancy. Once back at the hotel they packaged, sorted and organized everything for easy access during the run.

The team also found a mascot for the race:

Bourbon Chicken flies and clucks (both sure to be annoying by late in the run) and he will be with them during the entire run. (Weeble found BC and should be credited for being Team Pirana’s mascot)

Jim Beam Distillery

by admin on October 8, 2009

Team Piraña took the tour of the Jim Beam distillery. It is a beautiful place and is loaded with history. They make 750 barrels of bourbon a day and have the capacity to store 2.1 million barrels. It is amazing how simple the process is: grind up some grain, add some yeast, cook it and let it ferment, distill the alcohol and put it in a burnt barrel to age and color it, drink. Of course, they have perfected every single variable over the years, so they make it a very complex and secret process.

Bourbon Chase Day Two

by admin on October 8, 2009

A day of rest. A time to relax. Gather the gear, prepare the van, final prep. And maybe a distillery tour….

After a hearty breakfast at the Residence Inn Gun Show

the team will be working through a short list of to-do items including getting a mascot for the run, buying groceries, driving down to the start and getting their bearings, going to see Zombieland, and maybe eating at a local Bar-B-Que spot called Jucy’s which is owned by the parents of someone BFG knew back in the day.

On a side note: the crew has received word from Goose that he will be arriving on a later flight (10:00 PM vs 10:30 AM) and combined with the comment from Samsonite from last night leads the boys to believe someone is messing with them.

So…

Note to Samsonite – if Goose doesn’t show the boys are driving to West Point and dragging your butt out to run.

Note to Goose – you do not want to know what is going to happen if you fail to show up for this run.

The View with a Room

by admin on October 7, 2009

Thought you might like to see where the pirana will be calling home for the next two days:

Downstairs ‘bedroom’ with murphy bed.

The upstairs ‘bedroom’ (sometime called a loft) with a real bed:

And a view of the living area (complete with lounging pirana) from the loft:

The living area has a fold out couch.

The boys actually have two rooms like this because there were supposed to be 6 people on the trip at this point. For those that haven’t heard, Big bailed on the team due to some promotion thing at work and Goose stayed in OKC for a day to complete some work and supposedly will fly into Louisville tomorrow.

Louisville Skyline

by admin on October 7, 2009

The team is in Louisville and checked into the Residence Inn. Once they were settled in the boys set out in search of local flavor for dinner. Adter some heated discussion they settled on Skyline Chili.

While not technically a Kentucky invention, Cincinnati-style chili is not available in OK. The traditional dish is a 3-Way, spaghetti with chili and cheese. Add beans or onions for a 4-Way or both for a 5-Way.

Mav and Weeble with the Skyline neon behind them:

The boys at the table:

Mav has already gone down for the count (he has been trying to hydrate and stay healthy for the run) so the other guys are watching TV and relaxing.

Tomorrow is a rest day. Maybe a distillery tour, some shopping, pick up Goose at the airport…fun and fun.

It’s 4:00, Do You Know Where Your Pirañas Are?

by admin on October 7, 2009

They are about 200 miles from Louisville and rolling along listening to Rodney Carrington. If you have heard Rodney then you know, if you haven’t then, well, you have to hear it for yourself.

A quick stop fill the van and empty Mav and it’s back on the road.

BFG scores some beef jerky (that’s for you mojo):

Weeble thinks they are going to Woodstock:

Currently the team is trying to figure out when they will cross the time line into eastern time…
